This is one of the most heartfelt, moving, and true expressions of Christian love I have ever come across. Many of us would do well to incorporate it into their own rule of prayer.

Lord, remember not only the men of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember rather the fruits we have brought, thanks to this suffering: our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart that has grown out of this. And when they come into judgment, let all the fruit we have borne be their forgiveness.

Attributed to St. Patrick, Bishop of Ireland. Using the lyrical form of a Gaelic charm, but phrased in a distinctly Christian manner. Also known as St. Patrick’s Breastplate.

I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity:
The faith of the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

I bind to myself today
The virtue of the Incarnation of Christ with His Baptism,
The virtue of His crucifixion with His burial,
The virtue of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
The virtue of His coming on the Judgement Day.

I bind to myself today
The virtue of the love of the Cherubim,
In the obedience of the angels,
In the service of the archangels,
In the hope of resurrection unto reward,
In the prayers of the Patriarchs,
In the predictions of the Prophets,
In the preaching of the Apostles,
In the faith of the Confessors,
In the purity of the holy Virgins,
In the deeds of righteous men.

I bind to myself today
The power of Heaven,
The light of the Sun,
The whiteness of the Moon,
The splendour of Fire,
The flashing of Lightning,
The swiftness of Wind,
The depth of Sea,
The stability of Earth,
The firmness of Rocks.

I bind to myself today
God’s Power to guide me,
God’s Might to uphold me,
God’s Wisdom to teach me,
God’s Eye to look before me,
God’s Ear to hear me,
God’s Word to be my speech,
God’s Hand to guide me,
God’s Way to lie before me,
God’s Shield to shelter me,
God’s Host to secure me,
Against the snares of demons,
Against the seductions of vices,
Against the lusts of nature,
Against everyone who meditates injury to me,
Whether far or near,
Whether few or with many.

I invoke today all these virtues
Against every hostile merciless power
Which may assail my body and my soul,
Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black laws of heathenism,
Against the false laws of heresy,
Against the deceits of idolatry,
Against the spells of women, and smiths, and Druids,
Against every knowledge that blinds the soul of man.

Christ, protect me today
Against every poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against the death-wound,
That I may receive abundant reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,

Christ in the fort,
Christ in the chariot seat,
Christ in the ship’s deck,

Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of an invocation of the Trinity,
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

Salvation is of the Lord,
Salvation is of the Lord,
Salvation is of Christ;
May Thy Salvation, O Lord, be with us forever. Amen.

~Trisagion Prayers~

O heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who art in all places and fillest all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of life: Come, and dwell in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us. (thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy God, visit and heal our infirmities for thy Name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

~O Come, Let Us Worship~

O come, let us worship God our King!

O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God!

O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God!

~Psalms~

Psalm 83 (Monday/Thursday)
How amiable are Thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself where she may lay her young; even Thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house; they will be ever praising Thee. Blessed is the man whose strength is in Thee, in whose heart are Thy ways, who passing through the Valley of Baca makes it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. They go from strength to strength; every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.

O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob. Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of Thine anointed. For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in Thee!

Psalm 84 (Tuesday/Friday)
LORD, Thou hast been favorable unto Thy land; Thou hast released the captives of Jacob. Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of Thy people; Thou hast covered all their sin. Thou hast taken away all Thy wrath; Thou hast turned Thyself from the fierceness of Thine anger. Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause Thine anger toward us to cease. Wilt Thou be angry with us for ever? Wilt Thou draw out Thine anger to all generations? Wilt Thou not revive us again, that Thy people may rejoice in Thee? Show us Thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us Thy salvation.

I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace unto His people and to His saints; but let them not turn again to folly. Surely His salvation is nigh them that fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good, and our land shall yield her increase. Righteousness shall go before Him, and shall set us in the way of His steps.

Psalm 85 (Wednesday/Saturday)
Bow down Thine ear, O LORD; hear me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my soul, for I am holy; O Thou my God, save Thy servant that trusteth in Thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord, for I cry unto Thee daily. Make the soul of Thy servant rejoice, for unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For Thou, Lord, art good and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon Thee. Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon Thee, for Thou wilt answer me.

Among the gods there is none like unto Thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto Thy works. All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and worship before Thee, O Lord, and shall glorify Thy name. For Thou art great and doest wondrous things: Thou alone art God. Teach me Thy way, O LORD; I will walk in Thy truth; unite my heart to fear Thy name. I will praise Thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Thy name for evermore. For great is Thy mercy toward me, and Thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. O God, the proud have risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul, and have not set Thee before them. But Thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. O turn unto me and have mercy upon me; give Thy strength unto Thy servant, and save the son of Thine handmaid. Show me a token for good, that they that hate me may see it and be ashamed, because Thou, LORD, hast helped me and comforted me.

~Alleluia~

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord, our God and our hope, glory be to Thee!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

~Troparion of the Day~

Here the troparion of the day is sung. See http://bookofprayer.wordpress.com/2007/07/13/daily-troparia/

In addition, the troparia for the saints commemorated on this day may be sung here.

~Theotokion and Psalm Verse of the Hour~

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion: O Lord, who for our sake wast born of a Virgin, and suffered crucifixion, O Good One, and destroyed death by death, and as God revealed the Resurrection; Do not despise those whom Thou hast created with Thine own hand; show forth Thy love for mankind, O Merciful One; accept the intercessions of Thy mother, the Theotokos, for us, and save Thy despairing people.

Psalm Verse: Do not forsake us utterly, for Thy Name’s sake, and do not destroy Thy covenant; and do not take Thy mercies from us, for the sake of Abraham whom Thou lovedst, and for the sake of Isaac, Thy servant, and of Israel, Thy holy one.

~First Prayer of the Hour~

Order my steps in Thy Word, and so shall no wickedness have dominion over me. Deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men, and so shall I keep Thy commandments. Show the light of Thy countenance upon Thy servant, and teach me Thy commandment. Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise, O Lord, that I may sing of Thy glory and honour all day long.

~Kontakion of the Day~

Here the kontakion of the day (and any kontakia for the commemorated saints) is sung, except during Great Lent, when the kontakion specific to that season is sung.

~The Second Prayer of the Hour~

O Christ our God, who at all times and in every hour, in heaven and on earth, art worshipped and glorified; who art long-suffering, merciful and compassionate; who lovest the just and showest mercy upon the sinner; who callest all to salvation through the promise of blessings to come; O Lord, in this hour receive our supplications, and direct our lives according to thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulation, evil and distress. Encompass us with thy holy Angels, that guided and guarded by them, we may attain to the unity of the faith and to the knowledge of thine unapproachable glory, for thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Prayer of St. Ephrem the Syrian is here added during Great Lent & Holy Week with prostrations; otherwise, proceed to the Conclusion.

O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despondency, lust for power and idle talk.

But grant unto me, Thy servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love.

Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see mine own faults and not to judge my brothers and sisters. For blessed art Thou unto ages of ages. Amen.

~Conclusion~

Lord, have mercy. (thrice)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, who without defilement gavest birth to God the Word: true Theotokos, we magnify thee.

Concluding Prayer of the Hour
O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, Who hast patiently endured our sins, and Who hast led us even to the present hour in which, as Thou didst hang upon the life-giving tree Thou madest a way into Paradise for the repentant thief, and by death destroyed death: cleanse us sinners and Thine unworthy servants; for we have sinned and have dealt iniquitously, and we are not worthy to lift our eyes to the heights of heaven, for we have abandoned the part of Thy righteousness, and have walked after the desires of our own hearts. But we implore Thy boundless goodness: spare us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Thy mercies, and save us, for Thy holy Name’s sake; for our days have passed away in vanity. Pull us away from the hand of the adversary, and forgive our sins and deaden in us fleshy imagination; that putting off the old man, we may be clothed with the new man, and may live unto Thee, our Master and Benefactor; and that following Thy commandments, we may attain to eternal rest, where is the dwelling-place of all those who rejoice. For Thou art, in truth, the true joy and exultation of those who love Thee, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with the eternal Father, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (thrice)

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us, and save us.

~Psalms~

Psalm 53 (Monday/Thursday)
Save me, O God, by Thy name, and judge me by Thy strength. Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul; they have not set God before them.

Behold, God is mine helper; the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. He shall reward evil unto mine enemies; cut them off in Thy truth. I will freely sacrifice unto Thee; I will praise Thy name, O LORD, for it is good. For He hath delivered me out of all trouble, and mine eye hath seen my desire upon mine enemies.

Psalm 54 (Tuesday/Friday)
Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not Thyself from my supplication. Attend unto me and hear me; I mourn in my complaint and moan, because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked; for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. My heart is sorely pained within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. And I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away and be at rest. Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness; I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.”

Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof; mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it. Wickedness is in the midst thereof; deceit and guile depart not from her streets. For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it. Neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him. But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company. Let death seize upon them, and let them go down alive into hell; for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.

As for me, I will call upon God, and the LORD shall save me. Evening and morning and at noon will I pray and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice. He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me, for there were many with me. God shall hear and afflict them, even He that abideth of old. Because they have not changed, therefore they fear not God. He hath put forth his hands against those that are at peace with him; he hath broken his covenant. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. But Thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction; bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in Thee.

Psalm 90 (Wednesday/Saturday)
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him will I trust.” Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust; His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flieth by day, nor of the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor of the destruction that layeth waste at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand, but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the LORD, who is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation, there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample underfoot. “Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he hath known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My salvation.”

~Alleluia~

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord, our God and our hope, glory be to Thee!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

~Troparion of the Day~

Here the troparion of the day is sung. See http://bookofprayer.wordpress.com/2007/07/13/daily-troparia/

In addition, the troparia for the saints commemorated on this day may be sung here.

~Theotokion and Psalm Verse of the Hour~

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion: Seeing that we have no boldness, because of the multitude of our sins, do thou, O Virgin Theotokos, fervently entreat him who was born of thee; for the prayer of a mother avails much to the good will of the Master. Despise not the supplications of sinners, O all-revered one; for merciful and mighty to save is He who graciously willed to suffer for us.

Psalm Verse: Let Thy tender mercies quickly go before us, O Lord, for we have become very poor. Help us, O God our Savior, for the sake of the glory of Thy name; O Lord, deliver us, and cleanse our sins, for Thy name’s sake.

~First Prayer of the Hour~

Let Thy tender mercies speedily go before us, O Lord, for we have become very poor. Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of Thy Name: O Lord, deliver us and cleanse our sins for Thy Name’s sake.

O God and Lord of Hosts and Author of all creation, Who through the tenderhearted compassion of Thine incomparable mercy didst send down Thine Only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, for the redemption of our race, and by His precious Cross destroyed the handwriting of our sins, and thereby triumphed over the princes and powers of darkness; O Lord, Who lovest mankind, accept also these thanksgivings and prayers of us sinners and deliver us from every dark and deadly transgression, and from all enemies, both visible and invisible, who seek to do us harm. Nail our flesh with the fear of Thee, and incline not our hearts to evil words or thoughts, but wound our souls with Thy love, that ever looking to Thee, and guided by Thy light and beholding Thee, the unapproachable and everlasting light, we may ascribe to Thee unceasing praise and thanksgiving; to the Father Who has no beginning, together with Thine Only-begotten Son, and Thine all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (thrice)

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us, and save us. Amen.

~Psalms~

Psalm 16 (Monday/Thursday)
Preserve me, O God, for in Thee do I put my trust. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, “Thou art my Lord; my goodness extendeth not to Thee, but to the saints that are on the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.” Their sorrows shall be multiplied, that hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names upon my lips. The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup; Thou maintainest my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the LORD who hath given me counsel; my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad and my spirit rejoiceth; my flesh also shall rest in hope. For Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt show me the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Psalm 24 (Tuesday/Friday)
Unto Thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul; O my God, I trust in Thee. Let me not be ashamed; let not mine enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on Thee be ashamed; let them be ashamed that transgress without cause. Show me Thy ways, O LORD; teach me Thy paths. Lead me in Thy truth and teach me, for Thou art the God of my salvation; on Thee do I wait all the day. Remember, O LORD, Thy tender mercies and Thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to Thy mercy remember Thou me, for Thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.

Good and upright is the LORD; therefore will He teach sinners in the way. The meek will He guide in judgment, and the meek will He teach His way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth, unto them that keep His covenant and His testimonies. For Thy name’s sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity, for it is great. What man is he that feareth the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way that He shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease, and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.

Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD, for He shall pluck my feet out of the net. Turn Thee unto me and have mercy upon me, for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; O bring Thou me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction and my pain, and forgive all my sins. Consider mine enemies, for they are many; they hate me with cruel hatred. O keep my soul and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in Thee. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait on Thee. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles!

Psalm 51 (Wednesday/Saturday)
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy great mercy: According to the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out mine iniquity. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge mine iniquity: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done evil in thy sight: That Thou mightest be justified in Thy words, and prevail when Thou art judged. For behold, I was shapen in iniquity: and in sins did my mother conceive me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth: The unclear and hidden things of Thy wisdom Thou hast made clear to me.

Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness: The bones which Thou hast broken shall rejoice. Turn away Thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation: and steady me with Thy guiding Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways: And the impious shall be converted unto Thee.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation: And my tongue shall sing aloud of Thy righteousness. O LORD, open Thou my lips: and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. For hadst thou desired sacrifice, I would have given it to Thee: Thou delightest not in burnt offerings. Sacrifices to God are a contrite spirit: A contrite and humble heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy good will unto Zion: That the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, With burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings: Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

~Alleluia~

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord, our God and our hope, glory be to Thee!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

~Psalms~

Psalm 5 (Monday/Thursday)
Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for unto Thee will I pray. My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee and will look up. For Thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness; neither shall evil dwell with Thee. The foolish shall not stand in Thy sight; Thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies; the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

But as for me, I will come into Thy house in the multitude of Thy mercy, and in Thy fear will I worship toward Thy holy temple. Lead me, O LORD, in Thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make Thy way straight before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is exceeding wickedness. Their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue. Destroy Thou them, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels. Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against Thee. But let all those that put their trust in Thee rejoice; let them ever shout for joy, because Thou defendest them; let them also that love Thy name be joyful in Thee. For Thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt Thou compass him about as with a shield.

Psalm 89 (Tuesday/Friday)
LORD, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God. Thou turnest man to destruction, and sayest, “Return, ye children of men.” For a thousand years in Thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up; in the morning it flourisheth and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down and withereth.

For we are consumed by Thine anger, and by Thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in Thy wrath; we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of Thine anger? Even according to the fear of Thee, so is Thy wrath.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Return, O LORD! How long? And let Thee repent concerning Thy servants. O satisfy us early with Thy mercy, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad according to the days wherein Thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, and Thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, and establish Thou the work of our hands for us–yea, the work of our hands, establish Thou it.

Psalm 100 (Wednesday/Saturday)
I will sing of mercy and judgment; unto Thee, O LORD, will I sing. I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt Thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes; I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. A froward heart shall depart from me; I will not know a wicked person. Whoso privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I cut off; him that hath a haughty look and a proud heart will I not suffer. Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. I will early destroy all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.

~Alleluia~

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to Thee, O Lord, our God and our hope, glory be to Thee!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

~Troparion of the Day~

~Theotokion and Psalm Verse of the Hour~

Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion: What shall we call thee, O thou who art full of grace? Heaven, for from thee shone forth the Sun of righteousness; Paradise, for thou hast budded forth the Flower of immortality; Virgin, for thou hast remained undefiled; Pure Mother, for thou hast held in thy holy embrace a Son, who is God of all. Beseech him to save our souls.

Psalm Verse: Order my steps in Thy Word, O Lord, and so shall no wickedness have dominion over me. Deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men, and so shall I keep Thy commandments. Show the light of Thy countenance upon me, and teach me Thy commandments. Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise, O Lord, that I may sing of Thy glory and honour all day long.

Following are the hymns (called troparia and kontakia) prescribed for each day of the week by the Orthodox Church:

Monday: The Bodiless Hosts
Troparion (Fourth Tone)
Supreme Commanders of the heavenly hosts, we unworthy ones implore you that by your supplications ye will encircle us with the shelter of the wings of your immaterial glory, and guard us who fall down before you and cry: Deliver us from dangers since ye are the Marshals of the Hosts on High.

Kontakion (Second Tone)
Supreme Commanders of God and ministers of the Divine Glory, guides of men and leaders of the angels, ask for what is to our profit and for great mercy, since ye are the Supreme Commanders of the Heavenly Hosts.

Tuesday: St. John the Forerunner
Troparion (Second Tone)
The memory of the righteous is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord’s testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the prophets, since thou wast granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the Truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy.

Kontakion (Second Tone)
O Prophet of God and Forerunner of grace, having obtained thy head from the earth as a most sacred rose, we ever receive healings; for again, as of old in the world, thou preachest repentance.

Wednesday and Friday: The Cross
Troparion (First Tone)
O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance. Grant victory to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries; and by the virtue of Thy Cross, preserve Thy habitation.

Kontakion (Fourth Tone)
O Thou Who wast lifted up willingly on the Cross, bestow Thy mercies upon the new community named after Thee, O Christ our God; gladden with Thy power the Orthodox Christians, granting them victory over adversaries; may they have as Thy help the weapon of peace, the invincible trophy.

Thursday: The Holy Apostles
Troparion (Third Tone)
O Holy Apostles, intercede with the merciful God, that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offences.

Kontakion (Second Tone)
The firm and divine-voiced preachers, the chief of Thy disciples, O Lord, Thou hast taken to Thyself for the enjoyment of Thy blessings and for repose; their labours and death didst Thou accept as above every sacrifice, O Thou Who alone knowest the hearts.

Saturday: All Saints, and the Departed
Troparion for All Saints (Second Tone)
O Apostles, Martyrs, and Prophets, Hierarchs, Monastics, and Righteous Ones; ye that have accomplished a good labour and kept the Faith, that have boldness before the Saviour; O Good Ones, intercede for us, we pray, that our souls be saved.

Troparion for the Departed (Eighth Tone)
O Thou Who by the depth of Thy wisdom, out of love for mankind, dost provide all things, and grantest unto all that which is profitable, O only Creator: Grant rest, O Lord, to the souls of Thy servants, for in Thee have they placed their hope, O our Creator and Fashioner and God

Kontakion for the Departed (Eighth Tone)
With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the souls of Thy servants, where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.

Kontakion to the Martyrs (Eighth Tone)
To Thee, O Lord, the Planter of Creation, the world doth offer the God-bearing martyrs as the firstfruits of nature. By their intercessions preserve Thy Church, Thy commonwealth, in profound peace, through the Theotokos, O Greatly-merciful One.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy:
According to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out mine iniquity.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge mine iniquity: and my sin is ever before me.
Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil in thy sight:
That thou mightest be justified in thy words, and prevail when thou art judged.
For behold, I was shapen in iniquity: and in sins did my mother conceive me.
For behold, thou hast loved truth:
The unclear and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made clear to me.
Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:
Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness:
The bones which thou hast broken shall rejoice.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways:
And the impious shall be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation:
And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips: and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
For hadst thou desired sacrifice, I would have given it to thee:
Thou delightest not in burnt offerings.
Sacrifices to God are a contrite spirit:
A contrite and humble heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good, O Lord, in thy good will unto Zion:
That the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness,
With burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings:
Then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

King David wrote this Psalm after his adultery with Bathsheba. To this day, it remains probably the most classic penitential prayer in the Christian tradition. In the Orthodox Church, it is prayed at nearly every service.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, +
Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

It is fitting that the first prayer added to this site be the prayer Christ himself upheld as an example of the best way to pray. Church Tradition holds that it is spiritually beneficial to pray this prayer at least thrice per day.
